Early Literacy: Gift Of Reading (GOR) & Gift Of Expression (GOE)
The GIFT programme provides early literacy support for young children over four years (in kindergarten and lower primary) to better prepare them for school by offering essential early guidance and specially planned lessons with opportunities for the children to learn through play during the critical phase of their cognitive development. As one of our oldest programmes, GIFT has undergone several rounds of iteration and improvements but still remains largely volunteer-run with input and training by more knowledgeable others.
GOR centers on interactive books-based activities with the intent to introduce common sight words, play with word sounds for better pronunciation and encourage the love of reading via storytelling, arts and craft as well as games. Through GOR, children learn to read and write more confidently and creatively, increasing their English language proficiency.
GOE centers on more abstract themes-based activities with some dramatised storytelling, play, song and dance (curated or freestyle movements) as well as skits. Through GOE, children learn to express themselves better, increasing their English language proficiency as they speak and act more confidently and creatively.
